VOYAGE OF THE CAPRICORN LADY
Book I
Lost At Sea With Daniel T.

Captain Judith Gilman and her husband, Captain Dan T. Gilman III, sailed away from Central Florida in the mid 1970s, after losing their real estate company and personal possessions in an abrupt business failure.  Struggling to adjust to a different kind of life, they made their way through the Bahamas to the Virgin Islands on their aging wooden sailboat, Capricorn.

One moonlit night in the Bahamas, Dan and Judi were thrown out of their rubber dinghy.  As the swift current carried them out toward the open sea, the boat turned in a circle, striking Dan in the face with the engine propeller, inflicting terrible wounds.  After their rescue by a mysterious stranger, they were taken to a humble clinic at Deadman’s Cay, where a call to BASRA brought an air ambulance from Nassau.  The Captain eventually healed from his  life saving surgery in Nassau, and the couple made their way east to the Virgin Islands where they discovered “crewed chartering” as a way to make a living.

In subsequent years, Dan and Judi brought joy to their guests, but failed to heal wounds resulting from their wrenching departure from family and friends. Dreams and psychic occurrences during the author’s life are woven through the tapestry of the book, reaffirming her belief in the timelessness of her connection to her Captain.

“Forever” is the theme of this loving memoir of a Sea Captain and his lady.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: When my husband and I sailed away from Central Florida in the mid 1970s, we never dreamed we would not return for almost 25 years.  Living on a boat and operating a charter business in the Caribbean was never our dream, but by accident, we stumbled into a rewarding and exciting way of life.   My husband had worked for years to build a successful business in central Florida, and our life was privileged.  We owned sport fishing yachts, airplanes, condominiums and loved to travel, but after the fall of his business, our old wooden 40’ sailboat  Capricorn was the only thing we possessed, and to survive, we learned to live a different way.

During the years Danny and I  ran charters in the Caribbean,  guests often suggested that one day I might write a book.  I would laugh and say I might, after I was out of the business, promising to omit the names to protect the guilty.  When my husband died after a two year struggle with lung cancer, I started writing; it was time.  I remember clearly every detail of the adventurous and exciting life Dan and I shared, and I hope readers will enjoy reliving it with me.

The title of this book, Lost At Sea With Daniel T., does not mean we were physically “lost at sea”.  Dan Gilman never got lost at sea, he always knew exactly where he was.  He taught celestial navigation when he was an Air Force Officer, and long before satellite navigation, could exactly pinpoint where we were.  When we sailed away from Florida it was as if we left planet earth for another realm, a new life, light years away from the kind of life I thought I would build with my husband in Florida.  That life included being close to my children and stepchildren, my parents and friends, so I did feel “lost at sea” for many years.   This boat dwelling life was one I did not choose, but learned to love, and I worked hard to be successful in my new role.  The pages of my books are filled with humorous glimpses of boat dwelling and chartering, cooking tragedies, sinkings, hurricanes, island life, sadness and struggle, tempered with laughter and love. It was the best of  times and the worse of times, all rolled up into one. I hope you will order and enjoy my books.  Call me direct for signed copies, either hard cover or paperback.  Thank You!
